Below is the Collect for the Second Sunday in Advent from the Order of Worship for the Reformed Church in the United States.
I mentioned last week that the Collects in this volume are not simply reproductions of the Book of Common Prayer. Thus the prayer for this week is quite different. This week’s Collect in the BCP is a very fine prayer about Scripture:
Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
The prayer in the Order, on the other hand, deals with the cleansing of the conscience in preparation for Christ’s Second Advent.
The two are complementary, of course; for the cleansing of the conscience comes by way of the Word and Spirit.
Second Sunday in Advent
The Collect
CLEANSE our conscience, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, by the daily visitation of thy grace; that when thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, shall come, He may find us fit for his appearing, and ready to meet Him without spot, in the company of all his saints: who liveth and regneith with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
