Three more theses for today; these are short. In fact, the first isn’t really even a thesis or assertio. Hemmingsen just kind of slips it in there as a point of transition.
In these comments, Hemmingsen starts to turn to what the Sabbath and Christian festivals are now, while the church, following the First Advent, awaits the Second. He has already touched on this a little, but he has more to say.
Hemmingsen divides Christian festivals into three types, which he outlines below. Of particular import is the rationale given for Lord’s Day observance.
Assertions concerning the Sabbath and the Festivals of Christians (Continued)
- Thus far concerning the Jewish Sabbath. Now I shall add some remarks about our festivals and ceremonies.
- Our festivals are threefold, namely, the Lord’s Day, the festivals of the Savior, and the memorials of the saints.
- We observe the Lord’s Day by the example of the apostles, not for the sake of superstition, but for the sake of the ministry, order, discipline, and the exercise of piety. 1
